The Dark Side of Dr. Suess
Theodor Seuss Geisel, AKA Dr. Seuss, not only wrote children’s books about One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, but also illustrated racist political cartoons.
I also recently learned that he was not, in fact, a doctor.
I was the first Councilmember to introduce a Resolution calling for the complete removal of all "Dr." Suess books from NYC schools and public libraries.
The moderates in the Council insisted that we focus the conversation around six books - “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” “If I Ran the Zoo,” “McElligot’s Pool,” “On Beyond Zebra!” “Scrambled Eggs Super!” and “The Cat’s Quizzer.”
But "focus" and "conversation" never led to progress.
As NYC Comptroller, I will continue to advocate for the complete removal of the more than 60 books written by Dr. Seuss.
The books, originally published between 1937 and 1976, portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong. It's time we end this madness and purge them from history.
